When US companies weigh nearshore versus offshore for a Snowflake build, the conversation usually starts with hourly rates. It should start with clocks. The rate is the easiest number to compare and the least predictive of what the engagement will actually cost you.

Data and AI work on Snowflake happens to be exactly the kind where time-zone overlap matters most. Here is how to think it through.

The plain definitions

  • Offshore means the delivery team is many time zones away (commonly South Asia or Eastern Europe relative to the US), often eight to twelve hours off. Lowest headline rate, least overlap with your workday.
  • Nearshore means the team is in or near your time zone (for US companies, usually Latin America). Slightly higher headline rate, near-total overlap with your workday.

The word that matters is overlap. It quietly decides how fast the work moves.

The dimensions that actually matter

Velocity and iteration. Snowflake and AI work is iterative: profile the data, model it, test a Cortex use case, look at the result, adjust. That loop is fast when a question gets answered in minutes and painful when it waits overnight. With a nearshore team working US hours, a blocker raised at 10am is often resolved by lunch. Offshore, the same blocker frequently costs a full day per round trip, and a handful of round trips turns a two-week task into a month.

Total cost versus rate. A lower hourly rate does not always mean a lower project cost. Latency causes rework, rework causes hours, and hours erase the rate advantage. The right comparison is cost-to-outcome, not cost-per-hour. On tightly-scoped, well-specified work the rate can win; on ambiguous, decision-heavy work the overlap usually wins.

Communication and shared context. Live pairing, real standups, and a shared Slack rhythm build the context that makes a team effective. Cultural and language alignment reduce the small misreadings that compound over a long engagement. This is not about talent (there is excellent talent everywhere); it is about how much friction sits between a question and a good answer.

Accountability and retention. Ask who owns the outcome and how stable the team is. High churn means you re-explain your business every few months regardless of location, but the cost of that re-explanation is higher when the overlap to do it is thin.

Security, compliance, and data residency. For regulated data, where the team sits and how data is accessed can carry real compliance weight. Nearshore-in-the-Americas can simplify data-residency and access-review conversations for US companies; offshore can too, but it is worth confirming rather than assuming.

When offshore is the right call

Being honest: offshore is a strong choice when the work is well-defined and stable, when the scope will not shift much, and when the tasks can be handed off cleanly at the end of your day and picked up at the start of theirs. A mature, documented maintenance workload or a large, clearly-specified build can run very cost-effectively offshore. If your work looks like that, the rate advantage is real and worth taking.

It is discovery-heavy: the requirements sharpen as you look at the data, the best use case reveals itself mid-engagement, and decisions need a stakeholder in the room, not in tomorrow's email.   • How stable is the scope? Locked and documented leans offshore. Evolving and discovery-heavy leans nearshore.
